Grants of up to $20,000 to Connecticut nonprofit organizations and municipalities to support the planning of historic preservation projects. Funding may be used for pre-development and planning projects or for historic resources inventories.

All grants are made on a one-time basis.

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

Grantees can only have one active Survey and Planning Grant at a time. Grantees must close-out an existing grant before applying for a subsequent grant.

Eligible applicants:
- Connecticut municipalities
- 501(c)(3) or 501(c)13 nonprofit organizations that have had tax-exempt status for at least two years
- 501(c)(3) or 501(c)13 nonprofit organizations that have had tax-exempt status for less than two years but can demonstrate at least a 5 year-history of sustainable historic preservation program activity. Must be individually approved as eligible for funding by the Historic Preservation Council.

An Eligible applicant cannot apply for a grant on behalf of an ineligible group or organization.

- For-profit businesses or organizations
- Individuals
- Service organizations or clubs

Ineligible Activities and Costs:
- Costs incurred prior to the contract start date
- Costs incurred after to the contract expiration date
- Acquisition of real estate
- Archaeological salvage
- Capital expenses
- Construction, restoration, rehabilitation
- Court actions
- Curation
- Equipment purchase
- Fines or penalties
- Fundraising efforts
- General operating expenses
- Hospitality expenses including food, beverages, entertainment
- Interest payments
- Interpretive expenses
- Lobbying activities
- Nonconformance with the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties
- Projects already underway
- Political contributions
- Regranting
- Scholarships
- Software acquisition
- Travel

Pre-Application Information:

Applications are now being accepted for the June 2, 2021 Historic Preservation Council meeting. Please submit your application by May 5, 2021 for consideration.

NEW - Effective May 6, 2020 through June 2, 2021 the 50% match for Survey and Planning and Partners In Preservation Grants has been waived.

Funding for Historic Resources Inventories does not require a match.

Grant funds are paid to grantees on a single-payment reimbursement basis following the completion of the project and approval of all work by SHPO staff.
