Grants ranging from $5,000 to $20,000 to nonprofits in Maine, Massachusetts, New Jersey, Florida, Idaho, Colorado, and Connecticut to benefit residents of eligible regions. Program priorities include environmental education and conservation, community service, arts, and historic preservation. The Foundation will consider proposals for both challenge or matching grants, and encourages collaborative efforts with other grant makers.

Horizon Foundation supports nonprofit organizations that aspire to create and maintain sustainable, vibrant, and resilient communities by:
-Enabling children and adults to lead their communities in creative, healthy, and thoughtful ways;
-Educating citizens to be good stewards of the environment;
-Conserving land and water resources;
-Encouraging service to others;
-Promoting visual arts and music, and
-Teaching appreciation of and preserving historic assets.

In Maine, Horizon's conservation funding will focus on ways in which the state's unique assets can be used to mitigate and adapt to climate change, including:
- Programs that seek ways for communities to become more resilient by increasing energy efficiency and weatherization and the use of renewable sources of energy;
- Efforts in support of policies that aim to reduce the use of fossil fuels and increase non-carbon energy source alternatives;
- Forest and farmland management practices that promote working forest conservation, efforts to preserve high-value open space, and management practices that maintain and improve water quality and enhance wildlife habitat.

Outside of Maine, Horizon is particularly focused on identifying and supporting organizations that:
- Encourage learning in the classroom and beyond;
- Help to build self-esteem;
- Motivate individuals to reach for higher levels of educational proficiency and competency, and;
- Strive to increase the number of safe places for children to learn, share, and ultimately become stronger leaders for the future.

Organizations must be based in or primarily serve one or more of the following communities:
-Cumberland, Lincoln, Franklin, and York Counties, Maine
-Barnstable County, Massachusetts
-Fairfield County, Connecticut

Once you have submitted your application, you may be contacted to set up a site visit. Grant decisions are made in late May for the spring cycle. Organizations receiving grants will be notified of the award and must complete a simple, online grant contract before receiving the grant check. Checks are generally mailed out around June 1st for the spring cycle.

Past grantees must wait at least two years before reapplying. For example, if your organization received a grant in spring 2017, you would next be eligible to submit an application for the spring 2019 cycle.
