Request a Grant Writer

Grants ranging from $5,000 to $35,000 to Connecticut nonprofit organizations, municipal and government agencies, and schools in eligible communities to provide for the care, humane treatment, and protection of wildlife and animals. New applicants and applicants applying for funding of new programs must contact staff prior to submitting an application. Priority will be shown to programs that foster positive, therapeutic connections between people and animals; provide veterinary care for domestic and wild animals, especially spay and neuter services; encourage responsible pet ownership and the adoption of abandoned animals; and rehabilitate wildlife for return to natural habitats.

These grants must be for the benefit of the residents of the 42 towns in the region, which includes the towns of Ashford, Bozrah, Brooklyn, Canterbury, Chaplin, Colchester, Columbia, Coventry, Eastford, East Lyme, Franklin, Griswold, Groton, Hampton, Killingly, Lebanon, Ledyard, Lisbon, Lyme, Mansfield, Montville, New London, North Stonington, Norwich, Old Lyme, Plainfield, Pomfret, Preston, Putnam, Salem, Scotland, Sprague, Stafford, Sterling, Stonington, Thompson, Union, Voluntown, Waterford, Willington, Windham and Woodstock.

Preference is given to programs that are:

  • Collaborative in nature;
  • Regional in scope;
  • Rooted in evidence-based, solution-oriented approaches;
  • Serve lower-income communities;
  • Serve at-risk animals;
  • Include specific, measurable outcomes; and
  • Affect positive change over the long term.

The Foundation will also consider:

  • Grants for existing programs, new initiatives or special projects; or
  • Capacity-building grants (applicants are requested to call staff to discuss)
  • A limited number of grants if the applicant can demonstrate impact.

Estimated Size of Grant:

Eligible applicants may submit grant requests of $5,000 to $35,000.

Term of Contract:

Applicants can request up to three years of funding.

General Eligibility Criteria:
- Applicants generally must be 501(c)(3) charitable organizations, schools, municipal or governmental agencies, or partner with a nonprofit fiscal agent.
- Applicants must serve one or more of the 42 communities in Eastern Connecticut.

Restrictions:
- The Foundation does not make grants to individuals or to for-profit endeavors.
- The Foundation does not provide funding for capital or endowment campaigns, litigation costs, religious programming, endowment campaigns, deficit funding or debt retirement. The Foundation does not typically make grants for special events.
- Applicants may not discriminate against any person or group of persons on the basis of race, ethnicity, gender, age, sexual orientation, religion, national origin, disability, marital status or any other characteristic protected under federal, state and/or local laws.

Deadlines and Notifications
- Applications must be submitted by 5 pm on Monday, January 13, 2020.
- Final decisions will be made and applicants will be notified by the end of April 2020.

Applicants that are new to the Foundation or are applying for a new program should contact the Community Foundation for feedback on the proposal. Applicants are requested to call staff to discuss their idea or submit a letter of intent which summarizes the request in no more than two pages.

Note: a new policy for three-year grants requires taking a fourth year off from funding.
