American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP)
08/01/19
12/07/19
Grants to USA, Canada, and International individuals affiliated with nonprofit organizations and institutions for research that will further suicide prevention efforts. A letter of intent is required prior to submitting a full application. Applications will be accepted from investigators representing all academic disciplines for both basic and applied research. All studies must focus primarily on suicide or suicide prevention.
Grants are designed to advance innovative, high-risk, potentially high-yield projects that focus on a specific area of suicide prevention. All AFSP research grants are designed to support research on suicide from a variety of disciplines including psychiatry, medicine, psychology, genetics, epidemiology, neurobiology, sociology, nursing, social work, health services administration, and many others.
Types of Focus Grants:
Short-Term Risk:
- Supports innovative, potentially high-yield solutions that focus on short-term risk for suicide.
- The development of identification and/or intervention strategies for short-term suicide risk that can be readily implemented in clinical settings.
Reaching 20% by 2025:
- The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention has set a bold goal to reduce our nation’s suicide rate 20% by the year 2025, and seeks the development of interventions that will save the greatest amount of lives.
- Universal, selective or indicated interventions that target suicide prevention in healthcare systems, emergency departments, corrections settings, or among the gun owning community, that, if implemented on a large scale, would reduce the annual U.S. suicide rate.
Blue Sky Research Grant:
- Supports an innovative, impactful study in an area of suicide research that will achieve significant goals. This mechanism is intended for studies that, by their very nature, are clearly beyond the financial scope of the Foundation's Innovation Grants.
- Innovative projects in new areas of investigation with potentially high impact for the understanding and prevention of suicide. Open to all fields of inquiry
Allowable costs include:
- Compensation for investigators and other personnel required to conduct the research (e.g. technicians, research assistants, clerical staff), including salary and fringe benefits
- Consultant fees
- Consumable research supplies
- Costs related to assessment measures, tests or procedures
- Travel specifically required of personnel or participants to achieve the research aims
