Grants of up to $5,000 to USA, Canada, and International organizations and individuals to promote research, medical care, and education for breast disease patients. In addition, awards of $1,000 are offered to USA and Canada breast surgeons practicing humanistic medicine to attend the American Society of Breast Surgeons Annual Meeting in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Four grant categories are available: 

Education Grant

  • Purpose: To raise awareness of breast cancer and increase the capabilities of effective patient breast health education programs. Education grants are intended to support costs associated with a project (e.g., purchase of educational materials, brochure development, printing, etc.) and/or expenses related to the development and hosting of an educational meeting or conference.
  • Eligibility: The grant project must be specific to patient breast health and/or patient breast cancer education

Community Outreach Grant

  • Purpose: To partner with community-based nonprofit organizations to provide education on breast health and screening to underserved, uninsured and/or low-income populations.
  • Eligibility: The grant project must be specific to medically underserved, uninsured and/or low-income areas

Research Grant

  • Purpose: To foster research activities of the grantee. Funds may be used for activities necessary to undertake or complete a research project (examples: providing support for ongoing projects, IRB submission fees, clinical research assistance or statistical support).
  • Eligibility. The project must be specific to patient breast health and/or breast disease. The Foundation grant does not have to be the sole source of funding for the project, although any commercial funding must be disclosed to the ASBrS Foundation.

Humanism in Medicine Award

  • Purpose: The Gold Foundation Humanism in Medicine Award is presented to a practicing physician who has been selected by The American Society of Breast Surgeons Foundation based on the following criteria:
    • Demonstrates compassion and empathy in the delivery of patient care
    • Displays competence in scientific endeavors
    • Shows respect for patients, families and co-workers
    • Demonstrates cultural sensitivity in working with patients and family members of diverse backgrounds
    • Displays effective, empathetic communication and listening skills
    • Understands a patient’s need for interpretation of complex medical diagnoses and treatments and makes an effort to ensure patient comprehension
    • Understands and shows respect for the patient’s viewpoint
    • Is sensitive to the patient’s psychological well-being; and identifies emotional concerns of patients and family members
    • Engenders trust and confidence
  • Eligibility: Nominees must be practicing physicians, members of ASBrS, and residents in the US or Canada.

Estimated Size of Grant:

The maximum funding amount for each Education, Community Outreach, and Research grant is up to $5,000.
The Humanism in Medicine Award is a monetary award of $1,000 to attend The American Society of Breast Surgeons Annual Meeting.

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

Education, Community Outreach, and Research Grant applications are not limited to American Society of Breast Surgery (ASBrS) members. Nominees of the Humanism in Medicine Award must be members of ASBrS and residents in the United States or Canada. ASBrS Board and Foundation Board members are eligible to submit grant applications and/or may assist others in submitting applications.

While grant applications from nonprofit 501c3 organizations are encouraged, all organization types are eligible to apply. Nonprofit 501c3 organizations must provide proof of nonprofit status (such as a certified copy of the nonprofit’s certificate of incorporation).

Submission Deadline: December 13, 2019 by 11:59 PM EST

Funding decisions are made at the sole discretion of the American Society of Breast Surgeons Foundation and are subject to availability of funds. Preference may be given to a member of the American Society of Breast Surgeons.

​All Grant Proposal submissions will be acknowledged by email upon receipt. Those who submitted complete grant proposals will also receive official notification of the Foundation’s decision by email by March 2, 2020. Any awarded funds will be disbursed after the 2020 Annual Meeting.

The American Society of Breast Surgeons Foundation / Arnold P. Gold Foundation Humanism in Medicine Award is a monetary award of $1,000 to attend the American Society of Breast Surgeons Annual Meeting at the Bellagio, in Las Vegas, Nevada, April 29-May 3, 2020.
