Fellowships of up to $25,000 and fellowships of $55,000 to USA, Canada, and International graduate students and postgraduate scholars for research related to the history of technology and science in East Asia. Funding is intended to promote studies conducted by doctoral students currently working on their dissertations as well as by young scholars who earned their doctorates within the past five years. Focus areas may include related fields such as mathematics, medicine, and public health.

The D. Kim Foundation for the History of Science and Technology in East Asia is dedicated to furthering the study of the history of science and technology in modern East Asia (primarily the twentieth century on). The Foundation provides annual fellowships and grants to encourage and support graduate students and young scholars in the field, regardless of their nationality, origins, or gender. Comparative studies of East Asia and the West are also welcome.

The Foundation offers two fellowship streams:

- Post-doctoral Fellowship - Fellowships will be awarded to a distinguished young scholar who has received his/her doctoral degree within the previous five years. Applicants are encouraged to select different institutions from their alma mater or previously related ones as their hosts.

- Dissertation Fellowship - Fellowships will be awarded annually to Ph.D. candidates who intend to finish their dissertations within a year or two.

Number of Grants:

Three Post-doctoral Fellowships and three or four Dissertation Fellowships will be awarded annually.

Estimated Size of Grant:

- Post-doctoral Fellowship: $55,000 each
- Dissertation Fellowship: Up to $25,000 each

Term of Contract:

The fellowship term is September 1 through August 31, but can be adjusted with permission from the Foundation.

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

The Foundation provides fellowships and grants to support graduate students and young scholars who are working in the history of science and technology in modern East Asia, regardless of their nationality, origins, or gender. Fellowships and grants are not limited to students studying at US universities; students at non-US universities are strongly encouraged to apply.

Post-doctoral Fellowship: Fellowships will be awarded to a distinguished young scholar who has received his/her doctoral degree within the previous five years.

Dissertation Fellowship: Fellowships will be awarded annually to Ph.D. candidates who intend to finish their dissertations within a year or two.

Pre-Application Information:

The deadline for fellowship applications is December 1, 2019. Successful applicants will be notified by e-mail in early February.

Two letters of recommendation must be directly sent to the Foundation by e-mail. In addition:

- Post-doctoral Fellowships: Applicants should include an invitation letter from their host institution; the host institution cannot be changed without permission from the Foundation.
- Dissertation Fellowships: Applicants should include two draft chapters with their application.

If a recipient receives another fellowship or grant, he/she must report it to the Foundation. The Foundation may adjust the amount of the fellowship award accordingly.

English is the official language of the Foundation. All application materials (including sample chapters, papers, and essays) should be written in English. All publications, workshops, and meetings that the Foundation support use English only.
