Grants of up to $10,000 to Connecticut nonprofit organizations and municipal entities in eligible towns to promote eye health. The purpose of this grant program is to support research and education on eye disease and related treatments. Funding is intended for organizations and agencies in Greater Waterbury and the Litchfield Hills.

Funded by the Earl and Shirley Herbst Eye Research Fund, these grants promote eye research, enhance community awareness of eye disease and treatment and support ophthalmic educational opportunities for area medical providers.

Possible projects include:

  • Community health education on eye disease.
  • Support for research institutions (preference is given to Connecticut-based research)
  • Support of education and training for doctors and health care providers involved in eye disease research (preference is given to those based in Connecticut).

Estimated Size of Grant:

The average amount is between $5,000 and $10,000. Grants for larger amounts can be considered. Please contact the staff to discuss requests for larger amounts in advance of submission.

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

In order to apply for funding, an organization must:
- Be a not-for-profit organization recognized under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code, or a municipal entity seeking a grant for public purposes. Organizations may also have a nonprofit fiscal sponsor, if they do not have their own nonprofit status.
- Have a board, representative of the community, of which a majority is neither employees nor relatives of employees.
- Possess a Nonprofit Registration to Solicit Funds (or exemption, if appropriate) from the Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection. This registration must be renewed annually.

Ineligible for funding:
- Requests for political or religious purposes
- Requests for capital expenditures on buildings not owned by a nonprofit

Pre-Application Information:

Application due date: October 15, 2021

Applications are reviewed by staff, committees, and board of trustees in a process that takes about ten weeks from the deadline date.
