Grants of $20,000 and one grant totaling $30,000 and in-kind support to USA and Canada individuals and IHE faculty for projects that address sustainable food and nutritional health needs. Grants will provide financial support and professional consulting to plan and create projects for improved public health. This initiative will provide seed funding for team projects such as pilot studies, feasibility testing, needs assessments, and planning grants. Teams may use this grant mechanism to supplement current funding from other sources, but new project aims must be developed for the Initiative funding.

Specific Objectives of the One Planet. One Health Initiative:

  • Advance Danone‚Äôs One Planet. One Health vision through innovative, actionable North America-focused initiatives to promote sustainable food systems that contribute to the nutritional health of populations.
  • Foster a new generation of transdisciplinary thought leaders working together and advocating for food systems solutions that can benefit the public.
  • Amplify the understanding of sustainable food systems among the press and public.
  • Forge new networks and collaborative relationships among Danone North America, Danone Institute North America, academic institutions in North America, community groups involved with food sustainability issues, and broader food systems disciplines.

Number of Grants:

Up to four transdisciplinary teams will be selected and funded in 2020.

Estimated Size of Grant:

Each selected team will receive a $20,000 award, assistance by the funding source's Board members, and the costs of attending a program in Colorado, including transportation, meals, and lodging for up to four team members. The team that presents the best communication plan for their project will be awarded an additional $10,000 prize.

Term of Contract:

The awards will cover a 12-month period for implementing and evaluating projects.

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

To be eligible for this initiative, each team must meet the following requirements:

- Teams should include four core team members representing diverse disciplines related to food systems, including, but not limited to, nutrition, health, economics, agriculture, and social or environmental sciences. All team members must actively work together on the project rather than serving exclusively in an advisory role.
- At least one team member must be a faculty member from a U.S. or Canadian institution of higher education.
- The team may include other academic members, other professionals and practitioners, such as dining directors, community leaders or agricultural experts.
- While more team members may be involved, only four will attend the program in Boulder. - To the extent possible, the four team members named in the application should be the team members attending the program.

Pre-Application Information:

Selected teams will attend a four-day program in October 2020 in Boulder, Colorado.

The four-day program will conclude with teams presenting their communications plan to a panel of experts. The team that presents the best communication plan for their project will be awarded the additional $10,000 prize.
